The Path to One

Sang Shen & Yao Chen

15 December - 28 December 2023

The Path to One is a dialogical exhibition by Yao Chen and Sang Shen, centred on the expression and contention of Taoist philosophy in their respective art practices.

Recent graduates of RMIT Masters of Art, their work expounds and challenges ancient forms.

Sang Shen

Sang Shen explores lyrical narratives by merging Daoist philosophy with magic realist paintings. Daoism, also know as Taoism, greatly influences her artistic expression, guiding her to embrace the natural flow of life and the rhythm of the heart. By combining natural, imaginative and Buddhist motifs, she poetically translates her aesthetic experience. Sang captures the eternal world in a fleeting moment, interpreting Daoist impermanence through the transient phenomena of nature, such as clouds and water.

Yao Chen

Yao is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist specialising in multimedia installations that encompass discrete objects, paintings, performances and process arts. Yao’s work draws profound inspiration from the ancient Taoist philosophy of “emptiness”, exploring the concept of value, meaning and time cosmology with a critical lens.
